Power boards in NE to work towards profit oriented target

Aizawl, Jul 16 (UNI) Power and Electricity departments in all NE states, including Sikkim, has decided to work towards obtaining a profit oriented target to reduce the average Transmission and Commercial (T&C) losses within the current year.

The decision was taken during a meeting held between Union Power Secretary R V Shahi and other NE state power department top representatives, official sources informed here today.

The issues that were taken up at the meeting covered financial turnaround of state power utilities of the North East by 2009 by taking specific steps to achieve the turnaround.

The meeting also discussed the proposed reduction of average transmission and commercial losses at utility level by four to five per cent every year and reduction of average transmission and commercial losses in major towns, in the NE region, to a level below 15 per cent.

All participating states agreed to work towards obtaining a profit oriented target to reduce the average T&C losses within the current year, registering cash profit by 2006-2007 and book profit by 2008-2009.

It was also resolved to expand the coverage of Rural Franchisee Scheme to towns also.

Chairman of Power Finance Corporation, Power Grid Corporation of India Limited and officials of ICRA were also present during the meeting.
