NE tops cancer cases in country

Aizawl, Jul 16: A recent study by the National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP) has indicated that some parts of NE have the highest cancer incidence rate in the country.

According to the survey, Aizawl has the maximum number of tongue cancer surpassing Bhopal. Nagaland and Manipur showed the highest age adjusted incidence rate for nasopharyngeal cancers.

Both men in Mizoram and Asom and women of Meghalaya and Asom respectively have the highest number of cancer of esophagus, while on cancer of stomach, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim tops the chart.

The findings further revealed that because of smoking there was a high incidence of lung cancer among the women of Manipur and Mizoram.

When it comes to age adjusted incidence rates of other common types like cancer of uterine, cervix and breast -- for women, the North Eastern states were not far behind. Mizoram ranked third in the country in these types.
