Women cry for passage of 2 bills

Aizawl, Jul 16: The Mizo Hmeichee Insuihkhawm Pawl(MHIP), the single largest apex women group here, has demanded qucik passage of the long-standing women bills.

The two women bills which were dure to be introduced in the assembly were the Mizo Inheritance and Succssion Bill and the Mizo Divorce bill.

On the occasion of MHIP's 32nd anniversary, its president B Sangkhumi called upon women leaders in villages to influence the local MLA to lend support to their cause.

''MHIP effots to bring out a Mizo women-friendly customary laws have failed so far'', she said when commenting on the newly published Mizo customary laws.

Women's group, spearheaded by the MHIP, have been fighting for years to amend the Mizo customary laws as to protect and safeguard interests of Mizo women particularly in the case of inheritance and divorce.

MHIP president hoped that Mizo women's claim for better and justifiable treatment on matters of inheritance and divorce would get some compensation if and when the proposed 'Mizo Inheritance and Succession Bill and Mizo Divorce Bill' were introduced and passed in the assembly.
