St Petersburg, July 16 (UNI) The G-8 leaders today discussed and adopted documents on global energy security, fight against infectious diseases and education for innovative societies in the 21st century.
''The G-8 leaders discussed three sets of issues during their morning session: energy security, education and the fight against infectious diseases and adopted relevant documents,'' the media unit of the G-8 summit's organising committee said.
Meanwhile, French President Jacques Chirac has invited G-8 leaders to set up a UN organisation for environmental protection.
A source in the French delegation told Interfax Mr Chirac submitted his proposal to the G-8 heads of state and governments at the first working meeting of the summit.
The memorandum proposed by Mr Chirac said over 500 existing various environmental protection agreements and various environmentalist groups such as FAO, UNEP and UNDP lacked coordination in their efforts.
The destruction of the environment cannot be stopped without forming the new organisation, the memorandum said.
