Chirac calls for moderation in Middle East

ST PETERSBURG, Russia, July 16: French President Jacques Chirac today called for a ''show of moderation'' in West Asia, where Israel is continuing a fierce offensive against Lebanon to punish Hizbollah cross-border attacks.

''We would call for a 'show of moderation' from all parties involved,'' said Chirac after a meeting with US President George W. Bush.

He added that a lasting ceasefire in the region is needed.

Bush earlier said that Israel had the right to self-defence and did not back Lebanese calls for an immediate truce.
