AR on rampage in border areas

Imphal, July 16 (UNI) Moreh, about 110 km from Imphal, the border town in Manipur was tense today as 24 Assam Rifles (AR) personnel closed down shops and assaulted large number of people.

Police here said a JCO of the Assam Rifles was shot dead on July 13 by suspected militants.

The counter action was related to the incident, police added.

Last night, personnel of Assam Rifles started coming out in large number and assaulted all those, who were in the border areas, police said, adding no media persons were also allowed to enter the town by Assam Rifles personnel.

Today also, the AR personnel forcibly closed down all shops and large number of women and men were called out and beaten up, police stated.

Due to the sudden action of the Assam Rifles personnel in the border areas, the border trade between India and Myanmar was affected.

PIB (Defence Wing) said they had no information about the development in the border areas of Manipur.

Meanwhile, Imphal West police commandos and 32 Assam Rifles personnel apprehended two PLA cadres from Imphal yesterday, police said.
