MKU to be made Education Research Centre: CM

Chennai, July 15 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today announced that the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) would be made an Education Research Centre.

Addressing a function organised by the TNCC here as part of the 104th birth anniversary celebrations of Congress stalwart and late Chief Minister K Kamaraj, the DMK leader said the state government would accord the status to the University at any cost.

Responding to a request made to this effect by Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram, Mr Karunanidhi said the state government would avail financial assistance from the Centre for making the University, a research centre for education.

Paying glowing tributes to the late leader, he said he was much previleged to take part in the function as Kamaraj had always been a guiding spirit, whichever party was in power.

He said due to some unavoidable circumstances, he and his party had serious political differences with Kamaraj, but both he and the DMK never failed to respect him.

He said when Kamaraj was the Chief Minister and the DMK was elected to the Chennai Corporation, the DMK, expressing its gratitude, had installed a statue of Kamaraj, thanks to the magnanimity shown by late Chief Minister and Dravidian stalwart C N Annadurai.
