Law is neither trade nor commerce: Sabarwal

Hyderabad, July 15: Supreme Court Chief Justice Y K Sabarwal today said ''law, a noble profession founded on great traditions, is neither trade nor commerce nor a quest for pelf.'' Addressing the fourth annual convocation of National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR) at University of Law here, Mr Sabarwal said law was a part of the larger scheme of the welfare state where the larger public good takes precedence over all narrow personal or parochial interests.

The legal fraternity, including the academicians of law, legislative draftsmen and legal advisers in business were all answerable to the social conscience of the society, Mr Sabarwal said.

The Chief Justice said legal professionals constitute an enlightened section of the society who wield knowledge of law as a very potent weapon.

Mr Sabarwal said legal luminaries should promote cultural, legal and ethical values to promote and foster the rule of law and the objectives enshrined in the Constitution. They should also deliver to the vision of those who conceived and founded the NALSAR, he added.

Andhra Pradesh High Court Chief Justice G S Singhvi presented medals to the students who excelled in their studies.
