Disappointing start by India in Asian Junior Championship
Macau, July 15 (UNI) India's hope of a golden start suffered a jolt as favourite Saurabh Vij was outclassed by Chinese Wang Like in the Shot Put event on the opening day of the 12th Asian Junior Athletic Championship here today.
Wang Like, struggling in the initial throws, found the required rhythm later which helped him to convert his raw power to heave the six kg put to 20.17m to win a gold for his country.
On the other hand, Saurabh started well in the qualifying throws with a throw of 19.62m but failed to add any further distance in the final throws. He settled with the silver medal.
Wang Like was anxious before Saurabh's sixth attempt and even went close to the ring to check his distance as he was expecting a huge throw from Saurabh.
Kuwait's Mohammad Mashari too gave tough fight but finished third with 19.60m.
