SIMI activities under vigil in Surat: Police

Surat, July 14 (UNI) City police is keeping a strict vigil on some activists here who allegedly have connections with the banned Students' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).

Police here said it was a secret meeting that SIMI organised here on December 27, 2001 that brought the organisation under police scanner. About 123 SIMI cadres from all over the country participated in that meeting, they said.

The cadres who participated in the meeting were arrested and later let out on bail, on a condition that they should appear before the nearest police station authorities every month.

Police said the cadres, hailing from Surat, have been visiting police stations regularly and police is keeping a close watch on their movement.

According to police, at least 25 activists from Gujarat had particpated in the 2001 meeting.

The SIMI activities have come under scanner in view of their suspected involvement in the July 11 serial bomb blasts in Mumbai.
