Kurien quits as Tribhuvandas Foundation chairman

Vadodara, July 14 (UNI) Dr Verghese Kurien, the father of the White Revolution in India, has resigned from the chairmanship of Tribhuvandas Foundation, one of Asia's largest community health organisations.

The doyen of dairy cooperative Dr Kurien, who was recently appointed as the Chancellor of the Allahabad University, was the chairman of the Foundation, named after eminent freedom fighter Tribhuvandas, since its inception 24 years ago.

According to sources close to him, Dr Kurien had tendered his resignation as chairman of the Board of Trustees of Tribhuvandas Foundation on June 8, the day he stepped down as Institute of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA) chairman after occupying the post for over 26 years.

However, his resignation was accepted at the Foundation's Board of trustees meeting held at Anand on July 5.

A resolution passed at the Board meeting highly appreciated the octogenarian leader for being instrumental in putting the dream of late Tribhuvandas Patel into a reality. Dr Kurien, a well wisher of farmers, who led the White Revolution in the country and brought laurels not only to Gujarat but also to India as a whole, had established Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), NDDB, IRMA and a host of other institutions keeping in mid the development of dairy sector, the resolution said.

In March this year, peeved by a group of Board members move to bring a no-confidence motion against him, Dr Kurien had resigned as chairman of the GCMMF, the post he had held since its inception in 1973.

Besides holding the post of Chancellor of the Allahabad University, the 84-year-old Milkman of India still acts as a trustee of the Sabarmati Ashram Goshala (SAG) set up by the father of the nation.
