Deluge forecast in UP, death toll 50

Lucknow, July 14 (UNI) Widespread moderate to heavy rainfall was reported in the last 24 hours, even as monsoon continued to gain momentum in Uttar Pradesh.

According to information received, six boys drowned in Varanasi and Jaunpur districts yesterday taking the toll in rain-related incidents to 50 so far.

The met office here has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall during the next 24 hours.

Widespread downpour brought smile on the faces of farmers, who were anticipating drought-like situation following delayed monsoon this season.

Lucknow, Moradabad, Gorakhpur, Faizabad, Varanasi, Allahabad, Kanpur and Bareilly divisions have received rainfall.

However, people are facing severe problem since several low-lying areas are inundated after rains.

The weather has turned pleasant in Uttar Pradesh with mercury plunging due to showers across the state.

The weatherman said Bahraich received 11 cm rainfall, followed by Ghazipur 5 cm, Gorakhpur 3 cm, Jhansi 2 cm, Bareilly, Lucknow and Sultanpur one cm each.

Central Water Commission (CWC) said major rivers including Ganga, Yamuna, Gomti, Rapti, Ghagra, Ken and Sharda were swelling along their course following heavy rainfall in their catchment areas.

However, they were still much below the danger mark.
