Congress deplores Israeli actions, favours independent Palestine
New Delhi, July 14 (UNI) The Congress Party today expressed its serious concern over the escalating tensions in West Asia, and said a peaceful negotiated resolution to the Palestinian problem can only be achieved by the establishment of a sovereign, viable, independent state of Palestine living in peace and prosperity within secure borders in peaceful co-existence with Israel.
Referring to the recent developments in Gaza, the West Bank and on the Israeli-Lebanese border, AICC Spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said the party condemned the indiscriminate and disproportionate use of military force by Israel that has imposed enormous hardships and suffering upon innocent Palestinians, with women and children paying a particularly heavy price.
The Congress also condemned the targeting of civilian infrastructure, including Beirut airport, and the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers and called for their immediate release.
Dr Singhvi said the escalation of tensions could have adverse implications for the already fragile and volatile situation in the region.
"This grave state of affairs demands the urgent attention of the international community and the United Stations," he said.
Pointing out that the use of violence, threats and intimidation and the provocative statements and actions are a matter of regret, Dr Singhvi said they called upon both sides to display restraint and take urgent measures to de-escalate the situation and prevent it from deteriorating further.
He urged both sides to forsake violence and resume all necessary efforts towards a negotiated and peaceful settlement of this issue through a process of dialogue.
