Committees to be set up on centenary celebrations of Jagjivan Ram

New Delhi, July 14 (UNI) Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee today said local level committees will be established in Uttar Pradesh for sensitising people about life and works of Babu Jagjivan Ram to mark his centenary celebrations.

At the second meeting of the Birth Centenary Celebrations Committee, Mr Mukherjee said the local level committees in the state will be set up in areas such as Meerut, Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi and Gorakhpur and state Congress committee president Salman Khurshid will also be consulted in this regard, a release today said.

The committee will organise counry-wide seminars and conferences, mainly in UP and Punjab, in view of dalit development.

The committee also decided to establish two UGC chairs at Banaras Hindu University and Calcutta University, where Babuji studied, and sponsor ten fellowships for PhD and forty more Post Graduate level for girls.

The committee authorised Union Minister Oscar Fernades to take up with the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi a proposal to set up Babu Jagjivan Ram Foundation.
