35 children fall ill after brain fever vaccination

Bellary, Karnataka, July 14 (UNI) About 35 children have fallen ill after administration of brain fever vaccine and have been treated in a hospital in this district of Karnataka.

The children, who were vaccinated in St Joseph vaccinating site in Cantonment area yesterday, suffered from fever, nausea, head ache and difficult in breathing, following which they were rushed to a hospital.

Nearly three lakh children in the district have been immunised from Monday last.

District Health Officer Dr Hanumaiah said seven children had been admitted to the VIMS hospital as in-patients. Their condition was normal. The reason for the sudden development was yet to be investigated, he added.

Dr Abdulla, in-charge of the immunisation project, told UNI that the sudden deterioration in health after the vaccination was nothing related to the immunisation process, but only due to fear factor.

The effect of fear was more among the older children above 13 years of age. Those hospitalised would be discharged soon, he added.
