New Delhi, July 13 (UNI) Disapproving the lathi charge on students protesting a hike in the fees of professional colleges, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajashekhra Reddy today said the hike of seven to eight per cent was not much.

Talking to newspersons here he said he did not find fault with the students protesting the hike but lathi charging them was a bit harsh on the part of the police. They could have acted in a more restricted manner and just arrested them up, he said.

He said the government had taken a decision to pay up the cost incurred on the students belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes and the hike was necessary to keep the system surviving and asked the students to cooperate as it was in their own interests.
