SC panel to visit Polavaram site shortly

Hyderabad, Jul 13: The high-powered committee appointed by the Supreme Court to go into the dispute between the Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Chhattisgarh Governments over the Polavaram Irrigation Project was expected to visit the project site before month-end.

Official sources said apart from the inter-state disputes on submergence of land, the CPI(M) was spearheading a campaign demanding settlement of the claims of tribal families that would be displaced.

Orissa and Chhattisgarh had challenged the construction of the project in the Supreme Court, following which, a committee was appointed visit the site and submit a report.

The court will take a decision on the which had been pending for more than 50 years.
