Rain lashes many areas in region

Chandigarh, July 13 (UNI) Moderate rain lashed many areas in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana during the past 24 hours, plummeting the temperatures even as humid conditions persisted at most places in the region.

Many areas in Himachal Pradesh, including mid and lower hills, experienced a downpour since last night as monsoon remained active in the state. Una, Sundernagar, Sujanpur Tira, Chamba, Bhang-Manali and Mandi had light to moderate showers.

The capital town of Shimla recorded 9.4 mm rainfall till 0830 hors. At least four residential houses were damaged due to rains yesterday in Shimla. Monsoon clouds hovered higher hills, including the tribal areas.

In Punjab, where one person had died in wall collapse incident due to the current monsoon, Balachaur with 50.1 mm rain was the wettest place while Nangal Dam recorded 10.2 mm and Ludhiana 5.8 mm rainfall.

Patiala registered 0.4 mm rainfall and Amritsar trace.

Parts of Haryana also experienced monsoon rain. Kalka, in the Shivalik foothills, received 15 mm rain while Ambala had 0.8 mm and Hissar 0.2 mm rain till morning today.

Chandigarh and its adjoining areas in Punjab and Haryana had showers overnight that brought considerable relief from hot weather conditions. The sky remained partially cloudy in the city which recorded 13.4 mm rainfall till 0830 hrs.

Western disturbance over north Himachal Pradesh and neighbourhood has moved away eastwards, according to the Weather Office here. The upper air cyclonic circulation lay over west Uttar Pradesh and neighbourhood, extending upto 2.1 km above sea level. The other upper air cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan and adjoining northwest Rajasthan and southwest Punjab persists and extends upto 3.1 km above sea level.

Moderate to rather heavy rain or thundeshowers will occur at many places in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab during the next 24 hours, the Met office said.
