Major rivers rising in state

Lucknow, July 13: Following incessant rainfall in the last 24 hours, the water level of major rivers in Uttar Pradesh was rising steadily along their course.

Central Water Commission (CWC) said here today Gandak river was merely 4.49 cm below the danger mark at Khadda.

Other rivers including Ganga, Yamuna, Ghagra, Sharda, Gomti, Ken, Gandak and Rapti were also rising. But, they were still much below the red mark at most places.

Meanwhile, widespread rainfall was recorded at most places and the trend is likely to continue in the next couple of days.

Ghazipur recorded the maximum rainfall of 6 cm, followed by Gorakhpur 5, Deoria 4, Auraiyya 4 and Rae Bareli 3 cm.

According to the met office here, Gorkhpur, Varanasi, Faizabad, Kanpur, Allahabad, Lucknow, Moradabad and Bareilly divisions witnessed good amount of rainfall.

The weather turned pleasant in UP with mercury levels plunging at most places due to showers and squall.

The temperature fell below normal in Moradabad, Bareilly, Kanpur, Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Faizabad and Allahabad divisions.

Meanwhile, three people drowned after a boat capsized in an overflowing Gandak in Tayasujan area in Kushinagar district last night. This takes the toll in rain-related incidents in UP at 44 so far.

The weatherman has forecast widespread moderate to heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours.
