Japan eyes deal on UN N Korea resolution
Tokyo, July 13: Japan will work on a UN Security Council resolution over North Korea's missile tests based on a resolution sponsored by China and Russia that urges Pyongyang to suspend its nuclear programmes but avoids the mandatory sanctions sought by Tokyo, Kyodo news agency reported today.
''What is important is to adopt a binding resolution,'' the agency quoted the official as saying on condition of anonymity.
A Japanese Foreign Ministry spokesman said he was aware of the report, but that he could only say that Japan had not changed its official position.
''It's true that the fact this has been made a resolution has been a plus, has been a good development.'' deputy foreign ministry spokesman Tomohiko Taniguchi said.
''But if you look at the content of the proposal it seems in terms of the effect it's going to do very little to North Korea.''
