Human Rights Commission becoming a showpiece organisation

Bhopal, July 13 (UNI) A national-level symposium -- on the topic 'Effective implementation of the Protection of Human Rights Act' will be organised here on July 15.

Talking to mediapersons, Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC) Chairman Justice D M Dharmadhikari said the main concern was that the Human Rights Commission in various states was not reduced to a showpiece organisation.

The symposium will be participated by the Chairman and members of the Human Rights Commission in various states.

Justice Dharmadhikari said a related legislation would be presented in Lok Sabha during the monsoon session. Its draft had been sent to state Human Rights Commissions.

''The legislation proposed to continue with the recommendatory role for the organisation. However, we expect that the Commission and justice is directly related,'' he said.

Besides, objections could be raised regarding some provisions.

Replying to a question, he said the state government had raised the issue of curtailing of facilities being given to MPHRC members.

However, the MPHRC did not consider it a serious issue.

The MPHRC Chairman said the Commission had made recommendations in 29 cases in 2004-05 of which only six were implemented.

Recommendations were made regarding 43 cases in 2005-06 but only three recommendations were followed.

He said it was a matter of grave concern that recommendations in most cases were pending.

However, he added that human rights violation cases of most cases in government offices were resolved soon.
