Chief minister Zoramthanga turns 62

Aizawl, July 13 (UNI) Ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) President and Chief Minister Zoramthanga today turned 62 here.

Mr Zoramthanga's bungalow was flooded with ministers, MLAs, party workers, relatives and well-wishers who congratulated him.

On his birthday, chief minister said, ''it is because of the people's cooperation that he could work for the development of the region.'' Born in 1944 in small village of Samtlang near the Burma border in Champhai district to Darphunga and his wife Vanhnuaithangi, Zoramthanga completed his high school from Government Gandhi Memorial School in Champhai and later graduated in English from the DM College in Imphal, Manipur.

He joined the Mizo National Femine Front, then a banned underground outfit in 1966 and held the second highest post, vice- president's post in later years.

He was elected MLA from his home constituency Champhai in the first Mizoram state assembly elections in 1987, since then he never lost the seat.

He succeeded Laldenga when the latter died in 1990 and became the MNF president.
