Mass Rapid Transit System report to be sent to Centre
Chandigarh, July 12 (UNI) The Union Territory (UT) administration will soon send to the Union Government for approval the Detailed Project Report on the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) to be developed in Chandigarh .
This decision was taken at a meeting here attended by Urban Development Secretary Anil Baijal, Adviser to UT Administration Lalit Sharma, Haryana Chief Secretary Prem Prashant and other senior officials.
While addressing the meeting, Mr Baijal said that the MRTS project was a major decision for Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali.
Planning, architecture and aesthetics of the city should be taken into account while deciding the mode of MRTS, he added.
The UT Adviser Mr Sharma advocated for a combination of modes of transport to take care of the growing demands.
At the meeting, RITES Limited made a presentation on the growing transportation needs and various options for the three cities Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula. The presentation highlighted the growing population in Chandigarh and peripheral towns.
In the light of various projects coming up in the Chandigarh Capital Region (CCR), the officials stressed the need for an effective rapid transport system.
