After rains waterlogging in many areas: MCD fully prepared

New Delhi, July 12 (UNI) After the relief provided by rains, Delhiites today got taste of monsoon blues as heavy rains this morning led to severe waterlogging in several areas of the capital, belying the claims of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi of being in full state of preparedness to deal with the monsoon deluge.

The MCD, however, said it was fully prepared to deal with the fallout of the monsoons. It said most areas from which complaints of flooding were received came under the jurisdiction of the Public works department.

Areas like the ITO, Bahadurshah Zafar Marg and Jhandewalan in Central Delhi, Model Town and Azadpur in North Delhi and Shahdara, Vikas marg, Yamuna Vihar in East Delhi reported severe waterlogging.

According to information available from the control room of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi set up to monitor flooding during the monsoon, a total of 179 complaints of waterlogging were received from different parts of Delhi following heavy rains that lashed the capital this morning. Of this, as many as 114 pertained to flooding of the areas.

The maximum number of 53 complaints were received from the Najafgarh Zone of the MCD where there was waterlogging in Mangolpuri, Mahavir Enclave and Mahipalpur village. A large number of complaints were received from Rohini, Civil Lines, South, City and Karol Bagh Zones with the most affected areas being ITO and its surrounding areas, Zakhira, Model Town, Azadpur and Jhandewalan.

Flooding and waterlogging caused major traffic jams, specially on the ITO flyover and the Jhandewalan roundabout.

The waterlogging and flooding following the rains evoked a feeling of concerns of MCD members at a meeting of the Standing Committee today with the opposition BJP criticising the Congress Government in the Corporation of having been caught unawares despite the late arrival of the monsoon.

The MCD, claiming that it was fully prepared to deal with the fallout of the rains, said the task of removal of silt from drains, the major cause of waterlogging, had already been completed in nine out of 12 zones of the capital.
