4.78 million mobile additions in one month

New Delhi, Jul 12 (UNI) Nearly decimating fixed line phones in sheer numbers, mobile phones grew at a whopping 4.78 million in May 2006 out of the total phone increase of 4.80 million in the month.

Tele-density reached 13.95 in June 2006 as compared to 13.54 at the end of May 2006.

Fresh figures released today by the Telecom regulator, TRAI has said that there were only 0.02 million fixed line phone additions in May.

At the end of June 2006, total fixed lines were 47.42 million and mobiles were 105.95 million, taking total of telephony subscribers in country to 153.37 million.

A total 12.91 million mobile subscribers were added during first quarter of current financial year, however growth in fixed segment was just 0.64 million in the same period.

The broadband connections have also continued the steady growth rate since beginning of 2006. At the end of June 2006 total Broadband connections in the country have reached 1.55 million having net addition of 0.24 million during first quarter of current financial year as compared to 0.21 millions during the corresponding quarter in the previous financial year. The subscriber base for telephony services continued to maintain its growth during the month of June 2006 also. During the month, 4.80 million subscribers were added as compared to 4.14 million additions during May 2006. In June 2006 there were 4.78 million additions of mobile subscribers and around 0.02 million Fixed Lines.
