Violence mar MPP polls

Hyderabad, July 11 (UNI) A TDP activist was killed as violence marred indirect elections to 1097 Mandal Praja Parishads in 22 districts across Andhra Pradesh today.

In Mahaboobnagar district, the TDP activist was killed in the wake of a stampede after stone throwing by ruling and opposition party activists in Pedamandadi mandal headquarters, where both the parties have won equal number of MPTC seats.

The State Election Commission(SEC) issued fresh notification for holding of the Zilla Parishad elections on July 15 in Nizamabad, Karimnagar and Warnagal, where they could not be held for want of quorum.

The deadlock over sharing of power by the Congress and its ally TRS continued in the three districts.

Continuing its winning streak, the Congress bagged a majority of the MPP seats declared by the SEC so far.

In Anatapur, the Congress and TDP won 25 MPPs each leaving one to the CPI.

In Chittor district, the Congress bagged 15 MPPs, including the Ramakuppam MPP, which formed part of TDP Chief N Chandrababu Naidu's home constituency of Kuppam, while the TDP got six, as elections could not be held in two other mandals for want of quorum.

The Congress won so far chairperson post in 20 MPPs in Vizianagaram, while TDP was successful in 11 MPPs. In Warangal, Congress won 19 MPPs as the TDP got 14 MPPs, TRS three, CPI(M) two.

Three Independents were also successful.

In Prakasam, TDP was successful in only three MPPs, as the Congress won rest of the 46 MPPs in the district. The Congress bagged 18 MPPs in Karimnagar, followed by TDP with eight MPPs, and CPI, TRS and Independent one each. In Nellore the Congress won 32 MPPs against ten by the TDP.
