Stir against Taipaimukh dam construction to be launched

Imphal, Jul 11 (UNI) Opposing Union governments' decision to construct the Tipaimukh Dam in Manipur, the Action Committee Against Tipaimukh dam has announced a major stir here today.

Announcing the agitation to commence from July 16, the committee had charged that the dam is quite high and would submerge number of villages.

The committee said keeping in view the interest of the people it would be better to construct smaller dams.

The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation, which is supposed to take up the Rs 6000 crore project, has not yet held any public hearing in the state.

It alleged that some portions of Mizoram would be affected by the dam that would create a major demographic change in Manipur and Bangladesh.

It further said north eastern region is earthquake prone and the site selected for the dam was also highly prone to earthquake.
