Mangaldoi, Jul 11 (UNI) The employees of the now-closed polyster yarn mill PBSL in Darrang district today staged a sit-in demonstration near the state Assembly in Guwahati, demanding reopening of the mill and release of their salaries.

About 100 representatives of the 800 strong employee force of the Prag Bosimi Synthetic Limited (PBSL) participated in the five-hour-long demonstration. They demanded government intervention in reopening the mill, closed since November last year, and immediate release of salary, pending since March.

The employees alleged inaction of the district administration regarding the reopening of the PBSL.

Legislators Uddhab Burman, Ananta Deka and Binonda Saikia met the employees and assured them of prompt action.

The agitating employees were also extended support by Asom CITU secretary Deben Bhatta.

The PBSL was set up at Bijulibari in Darrang district in 1985 under a joint venture of the Bombay Silk Mill and the Assam Industrial Development Corporation Limited.

Set up as a Rs 300 crore mill, it went to become a Rs 600 crore mill with assistance from various financial institutions of the state.

The mill was established with the primary purpose of providing employment in the state.
