Manmohan Singh lauds peace efforts in Mizoram

Aizawl, Jul 11: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has praised the people of Mizoram for their efforts in maintaining sustained peace for more than two decades.

In his letter to Chief Minister Zoramthanga, Dr Singh said, ''In the last two decades Mizoram has witnessed significant development.

Above all it has experienced a long period of peace and stability''.

While appreciating the recent celebration of 20th anniversary of the Mizo Peace Accord, he said, ''The Mizo peace accord signed on June 30, 1986 is a historic document symbolizing the wisdom and patriotism of the people of Mizoram.'' ''I also appreciate the courage and efforts of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and leader of the then Mizo National Front leader Laldenga, who made the Peace Accord possible and demonstrated to our people across the country and to the world that through dialogue, negotiations and peaceful methods, it is possible to resolve the most intractable issues,'' he pointed out in his statement.

Dr Singh expressed hope that the example of sustained peace in Mizoram will inspire all the people to walk the path of peace in the journey to progress.
