Mah legislative council adjourned as mark of respect to late Chavan

Mumbai, Jul 11 (UNI) Maharashtra Legislative Council was adjourned today as a mark of respect to the late Vasant Chavan, who was the member of the council from 1986 to 2004.

Late Mr Chavan was also the member of Rajya Sabha from 2005 to 06 and was the member of the Legislative Assembly from 1980 to 85.

He was a cabinet minister in the late Sudhakarrao Naik ministry.

Moving the resolution, senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari said that the House should be adjourned for the day as the late Mr Chavan was friendly with many people and added that the body of the leader, who died at Majestic MLA hostel in his sleep this morning, would be kept at NCP headquarters here at 1430 hrs.

He was supported by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Harshwardhan Patil and many other members.

Deputy chief Minister R R Patil described him as a personal friend. Jogendra Kavade (RPI), B T Deshmukh (Ind) Madhukarrao Sarpotdar (Sena) and Leader of the Opposition Pandurang Phundkar also mourned his death.

Chairman Shivajirao Deshmukh described late Mr Chavan as a versatile personality whom he knew personally.
