Mah legislative council adjourned as mark of respect to Chavan
Mumbai, July 11 (UNI) Maharashtra Legislative Council was adjourned today as a mark of respect to its former member Vasant Chavan, MP, who passed away this morning.
Mr Chavan, a sitting member of Rajya Sabha, was the member of the council from 1986 to 2004.
He was also the member of the Legislative Assembly from 1980 to 85 and was a cabinet minister in the late Sudhakarrao Naik ministry.
Moving the resolution, senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari said the House should be adjourned for the day as Mr Chavan was friendly with many people and added that the body of the leader, who died at Majestic MLA hostel, would be kept at NCP headquarters here at 1430 hrs.
He was supported by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Harshwardhan Patil and other members of the House.
Condoling the death, Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil described Mr Chavan as a personal friend. Jogendra Kavade (RPI), B T Deshmukh (Ind), Madhukarrao Sarpotdar (Sena) and Leader of the Opposition Pandurang Phundkar also mourned his death.
Chairman Shivajirao Deshmukh described the departed leader as a versatile personality whom he knew personally.
