IBM announces development of 'DB2 Viper'

Chennai, Jul 11: IBM, the world's largest Information Technology company today announced the developement of "DB2 Viper," a revolutionary software to cut storage costs.

Giving details of the new software at a press conference here, Mr Harish K Grama, Vice-President, IBM India software Lab and Mr R Dhamodaran, Country Head IBM India software group said the new product to be commercially launched on July 28, would help the clients to cut the storage costs by upto 80 per cent.

DB2 9 code named "Viper" would enable the clients to more efficiently identify, consolidate, integrate, manage, secure and store information in real-time, regardless of the type of data format or platform.

The development of the product marked the culmination of a five-year IBM development project where the India Software Lab (ISL) played a critical role that transformed traditional, static database technology into an interactive, vibrant data server, they said.

Viper was the first data server specifically designed for Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) based environments. "Viper is designed and tuned to be the preferred information engine for SOA based environments," Mr Grama said.

Pointing out that the database market was worth 120 million dollars in India and poised to grow at 20 per cent in the next few years, Mr Dhamodaran said "DB2 Viper is poisted to strike and alter the competitive landscape in the database industry.
