Rae Bareli, July 11 (UNI) Union Water Resources minister Saifuddin Soz today said the centre would ''sympathetically'' consider a package of Rs 885 crore to Uttar Pradesh for various irrigation projects in the state.

Addressing a news conference here, Mr Soz assured he would try giving positive response to the Rs 885 crore proposal sent by the state government.

''An amicable environment has evolved between the centre and the state,'' Mr Soz said adding, his yesterday meeting at Lucknow with UP chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, the irrigation minister and other officials was a pointer to that end.

Meanwhile, Mr Soz suggested that the Sharda Canal and associate canals needed renovation.

''These canals are lying dry since the last 20 yrs. It is an uphill task, but an attempt to restore them to their original form must be taken up.'' He observed irrigation was a state subject, however, the centre would willingly offer help for reviving traditional water reserviours and rain water harvesting.

Mr Soz also laid emphasis on starting an awareness campaign to educate people on the issue.
