Spy seeks compensation, rehabilitation from RAW

Chandigarh, July 10 (UNI) The Punjab and Haryana High Court today asked the Director, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), to consider the representation for adequate compensation by the petitioner Karamat Rahi, who claimed to have served the agency as a spy in Pakistan where he was imprisoned for 18 years.

A division bench comprising Justices Viney Mittal and H S Bhalla issued these directions when Rahi's petition came up for preliminary consideration.

Rahi said he had to seek the Court's intervention as his many representations to the RAW for adequate compensation for the services rendered, had failed to evoke response.

Rahi, from Gurdaspur, submitted that he was sentenced by the Pakistan authorities to 14 years' imprisonment but his release last year came after 18 years had passed.

He claimed that while sending him to Pakistan, he had been promised ''the moon'' by Indian officials, but he felt badly let down as his family was paid only some small amount of money after his arrest.

As the agency later disowned him, no further help was extended to his family which went through a hard time, he said while seeking directions for his rehabilitation by way of employment along with the compensation.
