Sisters beaten mercilessly for stealing

Midnapore, July 10 (UNI) Two sisters were tied with a tree and beaten up mercilessly for more than six hours by villagers after a village court in Hijli village under Chandrakona police station found them guilty of stealing ornaments and valuables from a house.

Both the sisters-- Baisakhi Santra and Mantu Santra-- fell unconscious and was taken to Ghatal Sub-Divisional hospital.

Their conditions was stated to be critical.

Finding that the valuables have been stolen from the house, owner Nanda Sau, a retired school teacher, complained to the village headman Jiban Santra that the two sisters working in his house as maids were involved in the crime.

The whole village turned up in front of a temple on Sunday when the twins were tried by the village court.

Officer in-charge of Chandrakona police station Asit Santra said the persons responsible for the crime have been identified and proper action will be taken against them.

Nobody has, however, been arrested so far.
