Satellite-based education to come up in NE

Aizawl, Jul 10: A satellite education facility will soon come up in the North Eastern region here.

Besides Mizoram, two other NE states of Nagaland and Tripura would also be brought under the statellite education programme, the official sources said here today.

These states would be the first to avail this facilities, after it was launched by President A P J Abdul Kalam in 2004.

There would be a centre and a studio in three states, the officials said.

Nagaland and Tripura would be have 20 satellite education facilities while Mizoram 31.

In the first phase, the project would be introduced in government schools and then into private schools.

The EDUSAT services would be made available in other states like Asom, Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim by the end of March 2007.

North Eastern Space Application Centre (NESAC) is co-ordinating with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for the launch of the project.

Teachers would be appointed at the uplink station and the lessons taught by the them would reach the students in the remote areas through satellite.

The project is aimed to reduce the drop-out rates in schools and help the teachers to enhance their knowledge bank, sources added.
