Sania drops to 40th, Mauresmo reigns supreme in latest WTA rankings

New Delhi, July 10 (UNI) The first round exit from Wimbledon has seen Sania Mirza slip two places to 40th in the latest WTA rankings issued today.

Sania has 501.50 points in the rankings updated after the Grand Slam ended yesterday. The Indian teen did not manage to make much impact as she failed to even replicate her second round singles appearance in Wimbledon's last edition and went out losing to Russia' Elena Dementieva.

She was no better in the doubles competition and bowed out with Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands, after losing to Dementieva and Flavia Pennetta of Italy in the second round.

However, the loss has had no bearing on her doubles standing as she remains static at 33 with 888 points.

Meanwhile, the other Indians in the singles list continued to be way below Sania with US-based Shikha Uberoi (176.50) the highest placed at 163rd -- up three places -- followed by Ankita Bhambri (55.25) at 347.

Veteran Rushmi Chakravarthi (36.25) has gained 16 places to be 423rd above Sandhya Nagaraj (25), who is at 520.

At the top, newly crowned Wimbledon champion Amelie Mauresmo (3692) of France continues to reign supreme as the leader followed by Belgian duo of Kim Clijsters (3377) and Justine Henin-Hardenne (3093), who was Mauresmo's opponent in the Wimbledon final.

Sania's nemesis at the tournament Dementieva (2040), who ousted her in both singles and doubles competition, has risen two steps to sixth.

In the ATP doubles rankings, both Mahesh Bhupathi (1755) and Leander Paes (2505) remained static at 24th and 14th respectively after their mediocre campaigns at the Wimbledon.

Paes, who paired up with Czech Martin Damm, was ousted in the semifinals by the sixth seeded duo of Fabrice Santoro of France and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia. Paes and Damm were seeded seventh in the event.

On the other hand, Bhupathi suffered one of his worst defeats in Grand Slam career as he and his partner Alexander Waske of Germany -- seeded 13th -- crashed out of the first round.
