Nepal to dissolve palace Military Secretariat

Kathmandu, Jul 10: The Nepal government would soon dissolve the Palace Military Secretariat within a few days, Nepalese Defence Secretary Bishnu Dutta Upreti has said.

The local media today quoted Mr Upreti telling the Parliamentary State Affairs Committee (SAC) that the government would dissolve the Palace Military Secretariat soon.

''We are in the process of doing away with the Military Secretariat and the Acts related to the army would be amended within a week,'' The Himalayan Time quoted Mr Upreti as saying.

Army Chief General Pyar Jung Thapa has been criticised by political leaders for visiting the palace to wish the King on his 60th birthday on July 7.

The government had decided not to celebrate King's birthday and no politician and government official went there to greet him.

Mr Upreti said that the Army Chief had gone to the palace in personal capacity to wish the King.

This was the first time that the birthday of the King was not celebrated at the government level.

The holiday was also scrapped on that day.
