Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award arrangements reviewed

Chandigarh, Jul 10 (UNI) A meeting to review the arrangements for the July 15 Maharaja Ranjit Singh award function was held here today under the chairmanship of Chief Parliamentary Secretary Sports and Youth Affairs Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi.

Principal Secretary Sports RPS Pawar and Sports Director Padamshree Pargat Singh were among those who attended the meeting.

The members expressed satisfaction over the arrangements for the function being held after a gap of 10 years. According to Olympian Pargat Singh, invitations to Punjab Olympians, internationals and other dignitaries are being sent to attend the function in which 122 sportspersons would be felicitated with the coveted Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award which carries a cash incentive of Rs one lakh, citation, blazer and trophy of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, astride horse in warrior's dress.

Invitations have been also sent to Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi and Secretary General Raja Randhir Singh, Punjab Olympic Association President and senior Akali leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Athletic Federation of India working president Umrao Singh and presidents and secretaries of all State Sports Associations.

Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh will present the MRS Award.

Captain Amarinder Singh had revived the MRS Award which was discontinued after 1996 due to financial constraints.

It was also decided to hold a separate function to honour the Punjab sportspersons who have brought laurels to the state and country by winning medals in the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games.

The date will be announced soon.
