BJP to step up campaign against female foeticide

New Delhi, July 10 (UNI) A delegation of the BJP Mahila Morcha will call on President A P J Abdul Kalam tomorrow to express its concern over the continued illegal practice of female foeticide and seek his directive to the government to take stern action against the perpetrators of this social crime.

Talking to newspersons, BJP Mahila Morcha President Karuna Shukla said the Government was worried about the widening gap in the sex ratio but was not taking concrete steps to curb female foeticide.

The doctors are still illegally conducting sex determination tests, she added.

The morcha would launch a campaign against female foeticide tomorrow following which a delegation would go to the President to hand over a memorandum, she added.

BJP President Rajnath Singh, senior BJP leader and former Union Ministers Sushma Swaraj, Ms Sumitra Mahajan, and Ms Mridula Sinha would be among those participating in the demonstration, she said.

Ms Shukla said as per 2001 census, there were 933 women against 1000 men. In fact in some states, the ratio is still bad with 850 women per 1000.

During the campaign, the morcha workers would educate the people against this social crime, she noted.
