Asom govt's loan during 2001-06 at Rs 12,727 crore

Guwahati, July 10 (UNI) The total loan burden of the Asom government stood at Rs 12,727.35 crore rupees during 2001-06, Guwahati Development minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed the state Assembly today.

Replying to a question of AGP member Dr Alaka Sarma on behalf of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, the minister said the loan amount was taken from different sources, including the Centre, state provident fund, financial institutions and National Small Savings Fund.

He said the interest burden for the borrowed money during the past five years amounted to Rs 1179.37 crore and budgetary provisions would be made to repay the loan and the interest component.

Mr Sarma said government availing loans from different sources to implement developmental schemes was a common practice and the amount procured goes to the its consolidated fund. He said the loan would be repaid by March 31, 2031.
