Sub-surface water contamination reaches alarming level in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, July 9 (UNI) Unbridled use of sub-surface water for drinking, irrigation and other purposes has notably increased the levels of fluorides, nitrates or salinity in varying proportions in IT leading to water contamination, in almost all the 25 districts in Gujarat.

As per a recent survey, all the 25 districts, except Dangs, face the problem of high fluoride content, 22 districts suffer from high nitrates and 11 coastal districts is facing severe problem of high Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), associated with salinity ingress.

Situated in the foothills of Western Ghats, Dangs is the least populated and least exploited district, as it also harbours the state's only hill station at Saputara.

The worst-affected districts are: Banaskantha (789 districts), Patan (439 districts), Surendranagar (330 districts), Ahmedabad (264 districts) and Gandhinagar (177 disticts).

In absolute terms, the situation has reached an alarming level in as many as 8,252 out of 20,000-odd habitations in the state, including 4,341 habitations due to fluorides, 1,336 due to nitrates and 2,575 due to salinity ingress.

In a bid to ease the problem, the state government had set up 238 defluoridation plants and 60 reverse osmosis (RO) plants, Gujarat Water Supply and Sewerage Board (GWSSB) sources told UNI here.
