Logistics post to increase postal revenue
New Delhi, July 9: The postal department will soon start Logistics post from here targeting large consignments of goods specially for the corporate sector, which is expected to bring in revenue worth Rs 100 crore in the first year.
''We will be starting the Logistics post in the capital within a month and initially services will be started from Delhi to Jaipur, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Agra and the NCR. This post exists at a very small scale in Mumbai and Tamil Nadu which will also be expanded,'' Postal Department Business Development and Marketing Directorate General Manager John Samuel told UNI.
Rate per Kg for the post will be 2 to 4 Kg depending on the place where it is to be delivered and the lowest slab for the same will be 50 Kg in comparison to the parcel post which is targeted for small consignments and charged at Rs 32 a Kg.
Mr Samuel pointed out that while speed post and parcel post brings in a total of Rs 1000 crore per year, logistics post is expected to bring in another Rs 100 crore. He added that while the post will initially be for a limited number of regions, it will later be extended to other regions.
He said that with the high growth in Indian economy, transport and logistics will be forming a very important part of any business and Logistics post has been planned in view of this emerging potential.
The department promises facilities like collection, distribution, storage and carriage for Logistics post and warehousing facilities on payment of warehousing charges. It also promises that order processing and order fulfillment will be carried out which implies that if a consignment is booked and part of it is required to be sent to some place the rest to another, such an order will be carried out.
Also if some goods are rejected on delivery, it can be delivered back to the customer with no charges on the party to whom it was supposed to be delivered.
Mr Samuel also said that an arrangement will be worked out with the Indian Railways so that a quota of one ton is reserved for the postal department in all express trains.
''Logistics post will make entire logistics operations smooth by providing pick and pack facilities based on specific requirements of the customers,'' Mr Samuel added.
