China evacuates thousands as typhoon skirts coast

BEIJING, July 9 (Reuters) China evacuated more than 7,600 people from their homes near the eastern city of Ningbo as a typhoon skirted the coast today, heading for South Korea.

Evacuations were also under way in other cities of Zhejiang province, including Taizhou, Zhoushan and Wenzhou, Xinhua news agency said.

More than 8,000 ships had returned to harbour in Ningbo, south of Shanghai, and Zhoushan.

Typhoon Ewiniar was heading almost due north and was expected to make landfall on the Korean peninsula on Monday, the Hong Kong Observatory said on Saturday last night.
