Power generation stops in Nathpa project
Shimla, July 8 (UNI) Power generation at 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri hydro power project in Himachal Pradesh came to a complete halt today, official sources said.
The power generation in all the six units of the project had to be stopped due to alarming rise in the silt level in the Sutlej, which crossed 11,000 particle per million (PPM) against the maximum permissible limit of 4,000 PPM.
The sources attributed the rise in silt level to heavy rains and melting of snow in the higher reaches of the state.
The plant suffers a loss of Rs 8 to 9 crore per day due to non-generation of power, sources said.
The power generation in the plant also remained suspended for varying periods last year due to high silt content that could damage turbines and other heavy machinery, they informed.
