Bangalore, July 8: The PES Institute of Technology, ranked 23rd best engineering college in the country, today announced that it would provide free engineering education to ten meritorious students from rural areas annually.

Announcing this to newspersons here, PES Group of Institutions Founder M R Doreswamy said the move followed Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy's suggestion during his recent visit to the institution about providing free education to meritorious students from rural areas as they could not afford to pay exorbitant fees. A three-member committee would screen the students, preferably those studying in Kannada medium and whose parents' annual income did not exceed Rs 30,000.

The cost for providing free education to these students would be around Rs three lakhs per year per batch. Besides, the institution had also succeeded in organising free vocational training for school dropouts in five trades, comprising 40 students per batch, he added.

Mr Doreswamy said PESIT had become the number one engineering college in the State among over 100 technology institutions, as per a survey conducted by Dataquest-IDC. Ninety-three per cent of the institution's students were placed in various organisations and the average annual salary offer ranged from Rs three lakh to Rs 7.20 lakh. Over 20 alliances have been struck with various companies including Wipro, Infosys, IBM and Microsoft India Private Limited under the industry-institution interaction programme, he added.

He said the group would soon start a medical college in the Information Technology corridor near the Electronics city.
