LB polls may be in 2-phases
Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu Jul 8 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Election Commissioner T Chandrasekharan today said the State Election Commission is examining the proposal to conduct the Local Body polls in the State in two phases.
Talking to newspersons here he said he conducted a review meeting with District Collector Pradeep Yadav and other officials to conduct the Panchayat polls in Kancheepuram district.
Mr Chandrasekharan said the State District Collectors Conference would be held on May 25 at the State Election Commision Office in Chennai to conduct the polls before October 24, as the tenure of the panchayat representatives would expire by that time.
Efforts were on to review and prepare voters list and polling booths in the sensitive areas with the cooperation of the police department in all districts, he said.
Steps were taken to fill-up 1,40,000 posts for panchayat, village panchayat, gram panchayat, rural panchayat, among others.
The Commission has the right to debar the candidates from participating in the polls, if criminal cases were pending against them, he said. Contestants may be asked to disclose their property rights and assets, he added.
