Kolkata, Jul 08: Former West Bengal Chief Minister and veteran Communist leader Jyoti Basu turned 93 today, while Team India skipper Saurav Ganguly became 34.

With a view to celebrating the birthday of the great leader in a befittng manner, hundreds of people from all walks of life gathered at his Salt Lake residence "Indira Bhavan" since morning and wished the nonagenarian leader longer life.

However, a smart shower around noon has marred the people's enthusiasm to some extent.

Though Mr Basu preferred to spend the day quitely, his well wishers thought otherwise and have organised a number of programmes throughout the day.

In one of the main functions organised in front of Mr Basu's house well-known social welfare organisation Pather Panchali celebrated the day in a colourful fashion with hundreds of children greeting the veteran leader with flowers and sang birthday song.

In the evening another non-governmental organisation "Bhasa O Chetana Samity" (Society of Languages and Realisation) has organised another birthday bash where leading intellectuals, writers, sportspersons and others are expected to join.

However, on the other hand as Sourav is away in Eagland to play the county matches for Northamtonshire, his large number of fans have decided to celebrate the day in their own fashion by organising local level functions.

They have also planned to send large number of e-mails and birthday greetings to the former Indian skipper, wishing him good luck not only in his county outings but also for his chances of returning to the national squad.

"Though Maharaj is away we have already greeted him over phone and asked him to keep up his form and be happy always like before, " said his father Chandi Ganguly.
