WICB to seek Lara's explanation for outburst against selectors

Written by: Staff

Kingston, Jamaica, July 7 (UNI) Brian Lara's outburst against the team selections for the series against India and his subsequent threat to relinquish captaincy have not gone down well with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and chief selector Joey Carew has revealed that the skipper will be asked to explain his comments.

''They were unnecessary,'' Carew was quoted by the Trinidad and Tobago Express as saying.

''He should have addressed his concerns to the (West Indies Cricket) Board and now he will have to answer them for those statements,'' he added.

A visibly upset Lara, who became the first captain in 35 years to lose a home Test series against India last week, said he would reconsider his decision to continue as captain of the West Indies term as he was not getting any support from the board or the selectors.

Lara criticised the selections for the series and said his views were not being given any consideration by the WICB.

''There's a meeting coming up in a couple of weeks and depending on the selectors, I'll definitely revisit my decision to captain the West Indies,'' Lara had said in the presentation ceremony after the match.

The West Indian skipper, however, did not specify which of the three selectors were causing him problems.

The Windies selection panel consists of convenor Carew, Gordon Greenidge and Clyde Butts and coach Bennett King. Lara himself claimed to be a part of the panel but said he came to know of the appointment only a day before the fourth and final Test against India.

Carew said WICB will seek an explanation from Lara but refused to say anything on the course of action to be adopted after that.

''Since I'm involved in the matter, I would rather not comment on it and leave the decision on how to proceed from here up to the WICB,'' he said.
