Lucknow, July 7 (UNI) The Uttar Pradesh government today said it would abide by the Supreme Court directive regarding the CBI probe in the BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai assassination case.

''The state government will do whatever needed for the CBI probe in the murder case,'' state PWD Minister Shivpal Singh Yadav said here.

Talking to reporters, Mr Yadav ruled out any effort by the Uttar Pradesh to save anyone in the case.

''The government will not protect anyone. It is wrong to say that the Samajwadi Party government is trying to save a criminal MLA in the case,'' he said.

Earlier, the apex court dismissed a petition filed by the state government to stop a CBI inquiry into the crime.

A bench comprising Justices B P Singh and Altamas Kabir asked the petitioner state, ''How are you affected if the High Court had ordered a CBI inquiry to ensure free and fair investigation.'' SP MP Afzal Ansari and Uttar Pradesh mafia don and independent MLA Mukhtar Ansari are the main accused in the case. Both brothers are in jail.

Rai, MLA from Mehmoodabad constituency in district Ghazipur, was shot dead on November 30, last year.

The court also observed, ''The accused are not gentelmen.

Thirty-fourty criminal cases are pending against them and you are trying to protect such people.'' UNI MB VS AK GC1658
